OEM vs Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts

September 5, 2018 by Margaret Filed Under: Maintenance, Repairs

This is a difficult question with a few things to consider. Since we are the ones who will decide when shopping for motorcycle parts it’s important to know a few key things.

First, you need to consider what you are looking for. By this I mean is it for a repair or better performance?  Second, will this affect my warranty? Lastly, consider your budget.

What Are OEM Vs OM

Some riders are confused and perplexed in deciding whether to buy OEM or aftermarket motorcycle parts. First, we have to know the difference between the two.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) parts do not necessarily mean Original Manufacturer (OM) parts. Riders might have noticed that many motorcycle manufacturers do not manufacture every part of their motorcycle. They usually have motorcycle parts designed and manufactured by other independent companies. However, these motorcycle manufacturers install them in their machines or put them in their own packaging to be sold as OEM motorcycle parts.

What Are Aftermarket Parts

Aftermarket motorcycle parts, on the other hand, are replacement parts that can perform as well as OEM parts. In addition, they can be of equal, higher or lesser quality with OEM parts. OEM simply means they are produced by companies other than the original manufacturer.

The latter are usually resorted to if used as replacement parts or if you want to customize your bike. What are the things that you must consider before purchasing the same?

Quality First

When you are buying aftermarket motorcycle parts, be sure you are getting at least the same quality as that of its OEM counterparts. You can do this by looking at up to date reviews about brands and performance.  Never go to only one website to read about a brand. Also, consult a trusted mechanic and seasoned riders that perform their own quality work.

What About My Warranty

Will adding or changing out original parts for aftermarket parts void your warranty? The short answer is yes, adding aftermarket parts can void your warranty. That does not mean it will.  Make sure you have a very open line of communication with your local dealership service writer and mechanics. Ask them point blank if they are in the business of voiding your motorcycle warranty. The most common changes that will affect your warranty are aftermarket EFI tuners.

Your motorcycle should have come with a detailed warranty and number you can call you to ask questions.

That’s good to know that aftermarket parts could be better or worse than the OEM parts. I could see how that could make them a good deal if you could find the better ones. I should mask sure to do some research on any aftermarket parts I buy before I buy them if I decide to start repairing my car myself.
